Return of Braylon Edwards

It appears wide receiver Braylon Edwards could play against his former team, the Cleveland Browns, on Sunday after surgery for a torn meniscus five weeks ago.

Niners coach Jim Harbaugh expressed optimism that Edwards would participate in his first practice today since he injured his knee in the first quarter of San Francisco's 27-24 overtime loss to the Cowboys on Sept. 18. Harbaugh watched Edwards run routes during the 49ers' bye week.

"I had a chance to watch him work out last week," Harbaugh said. "And I anticipate seeing him out there tomorrow in practice. And hoping for good things."

Without Edwards and Joshua Morgan in a 25-19 win at Detroit on Oct. 16, the Niners' Nos. 3 and 4 wide receivers were Kyle Williams and Brett Swain, who have combined for nine career receptions. Morgan is out for the season with a broken leg.

The Browns selected Edwards with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2005 draft and traded him to the Jets during the 2009 season. Edwards had four catches for 59 yards in the Jets' 26-20 win at Cleveland last year.

With that being said, can Braylon Edwards actually become a descent fantasy option?

I see Edwards being a descent bye week fill in. Being up against his old team in the Browns and with the game being at home. What i don't like with the situation is that Alex Smith is still Alex Smith. Which means the consistency is not always there, and Frank Gore keeps continuing to shoulder the offensive work load of the 5-1 49ers'.

Also Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree have managed to perform well enough to keep seeing targets from Smith and actually coming away from games with some descent yardage. Crabtree will see the targets, but has not managed to get into the end zone this season. So hopefully Edwards can be the man to handle those red zone targets and get a little weight off of Frank Gores shoulders.
